Canadian Grandeur

Canada is a vast land with a wide cross section of habitats and native wildlife. The Canadian Rockies are magnificent and BAS has visited that region on several occasions in different seasons. Vast mountain scapes are dissected by impressive river systems, and together with conifer and broad leaf trees, provide ample cover to sustain both small and big game.

Traversing Northwards from Banff to Jasper it is relatively easy to find yourself immersed in this grand scene without even having to resort to a backpack and hiking gear. Yet it is the natural dominance of this area that pervades the eye and captivates the soul, making it easy for the mere mortal to humbly accept his finiteness.

Tourists are welcome and well accommodated for in the National Parks. The more adventurous backpackers can follow trails into the backwoods and over mountain peaks, willderness experience is necessary if a way home is to be found! BAS has visited this area on three occasions, each research trip provides new insights into this bounty full land, and excellent wildlife encounters are guaranteed.

Wildlife Adventures

Wildlife is abundant and accessible in this region, amongst the largest of which are the bull elk who defiantly parade their testosterone filled hulks during the rutting season. For another elk to challenge the dominant bull elk can lead to serious injury or possible death, however, victory for the courageous challenger rewards him with the spoils of a willing harem. This elk on view was the largest in the Banff/Jasper Parks, a close encounter led to BAS being chased full throttle with antlers down until a stack of nearby trees rescued the fleeing artist! One learns from such experiences and gains further respect for fellow creatures that could quite easily bring harm from any careless encounter.

Spectacular scenery is the hallmark of Banff and Jasper National Parks. Glaciers at the head of aquamarine lakes are amongst the highlights of such scenes. Lake Louise is a favorite tourist spot, it is well worth taking a kayak out on the lake and paddling to the foot of the glacier, it's a gentle pursuit with a fabulous backdrop.

Sightings of grizzly and black bears are possible wherever you may be, at certain times of year it is wise to carry a bear spray close at hand as a deterrent! As with most wildlife, bears prefer their own space and opt to be left alone at best, therefore it is recommended that a person is aware of how to react in close proximity to these large omnivores. Lack of ignorance can at times be the best form of defence, there is also much value in understanding the behavior of the wildlife that you hope to view.

The road system in the parks is excellent and a lot of ground can be covered in good time, that is helpful when the large size of the parks are considered. It takes around five hours to drive non stop from Banff to Jasper, but with spectacular views on display it is likely to take much longer for the journey to be fully appreciated.

At times there will be wildlife along the roadside, due caution is required when driving in such circumstances and it is usual for vehicles to pull over to enjoy the wonderful companionship that the wilderness offers. Bighorn sheep are the most likely roadside companions, they often gather at favored spots where salt licks entice them too close to the road for comfort. They are accustomed to bystanders and numerous stationary vehicles in proximity, taking photographs of these bighorn sheep takes little effort - not the usual wildlife subjects!

It's amazing how a bighorn sheep, youngsters in this case, can be quite at home in a seemingly precarious position. Nimbleness on a sheer rock face is one of the bighorn's greatest assets, keeping them out of harms way from predators such as the cougar, wolf and bear. Doing what comes naturally, these young bighorn display a confidence that belies their tender age. Where others fear to tread the bighorn sheep makes light work of crag and gully, a pleasure to observe but not to follow!
